Do not miss the Second DELOS Conference on Digital Libraries!

Background

Digital Libraries represent the meeting point of a large number of technical areas within the field of informatics, i.e., data management, information retrieval, document management, information systems, the web, image processing, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, mass-storage systems, and others. Moreover, Digital Libraries draw upon several other disciplines and fields beyond informatics, such as library sciences, museum sciences, archives, sociology, psychology, etc.

margherita.jpgCurrently, researchers, educators, students, and members of other communities continuously use Digital Libraries for information, as part of their daily routines, decision-making, or entertainment. Whether they do use the term `Digital Library’ or not, there are many systems that employ relevant digital library technologies. The present functionality of digital libraries has improved the quality of the results of users’ activities, facilitating better information provision and more advanced research. Nevertheless, the current state of affairs is still less than optimal, as almost all Digital Libraries developed so far have been designed and implemented having in mind specific applications, and lack the capability of supporting different information domains or to accommodate additional user needs.

The DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries has initiated a long journey towards filling the gap between current Digital Library practice and the needs of modern information provision. Its goal is to foster the development of technology that will eventually overcome the restrictions of today’s systems and empower everyone to further advance their knowledge, profession, and role in society. Ultimately, DELOS envisions systems with no logical conceptual, physical, temporal, or personal borders or barriers on information. The DELOS vision is that Digital Libraries will become the universal knowledge repositories and communication conduits for the future, common vehicles by which everyone will access, analyze, evaluate, enhance, and exchange all forms of information. They will be accessible at any time and from anywhere, and will offer a friendly, multi-modal, efficient, and effective interaction and exploration environment. To that end, DELOS aims at advancing the state of the art in the field by coordinating the reserach efforts of the major European research teams carrying on activities in the main technologies underlying Digital Libraries.

Conference Objectives

In this conference the DELOS members will present the latest research results and new technology development in those research areas where they have focussed their activities in the last few years The DELOS research activities are organized around the main themes that have been identified as critical for realizing the above vision. They are summarized in the table below.

DELOS Research Areas

The conference is intended also to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas. During the conference and in satellite meetings there will be ample space for both formal and informal meetings and “Birds of a Feather” sessions. A Workshop on Ontology-Driven Interoperability for Cultural Heritage Digital Objects will be held on February 15th, and meetings on a Digital Library Reference Model, Peer to Per Architecure for Digital Libraries, Complex Similarity Measure and Personalized Information Access are planned to be held immediately before or after the conference. Finally, during its activities, DELOS has established a number of collaborative links with other projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, such as BRICKS, DILIGENT, DRIVER, EPOCH, MICHAEL, MUSCLE, PRESTOSPACE, TEL, and it is planned to have a special session to discuss how those links can be continued in the future.
