The University of Basel, funded in 1460, is the oldest university in Switzerland. The Computer Science Department, part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, has been established in 2002. It has recently started a full Bachelor and Master program in Computer Science with a natural sciences and application-oriented profile. In parallel, the University of Basel is promoting the area of computational sciences. One of the main scientific foci of the University of Basel is the direction of Life Sciences which comprises a large number of interdisciplinary projects, linked across faculties, with partners from sciences, medicine, and humanities. The database and information systems group at the University of Basel (UNIBAS-DBIS) has been established in October 2005. Before, the DBIS group has been settled at the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics, and Technology (UMIT) in Austria. At UMIT, several projects in the area of medical informatics, eHealth, health monitoring, and Digital Libraries have been started. These projects are seamlessly continued by the DBIS group at the University of Basel. |
