DELOS Information Day
University of Bath, UK
September 15, 2004 (in connection with ECDL 2004)

DELOS, a Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries, is an initiative funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme.

The DELOS Network of Excellence is conducting a joint program of activities aimed at integrating and coordinating the ongoing research activities of the major European teams working in Digital Library - related areas, with the goal of developing the next generation Digital Library technologies.

The main objective of DELOS is to: define unifying and comprehensive theories and frameworks over the life- cycle of Digital Library information; develop generic Digital Library technologies to be incorporated into industrial-strength Digital Library Management Systems (DLMSs), offering advanced functionality through reliable and extensible services.

The other important objectives of DELOS are: to disseminate the knowledge of Digital Library technologies into many diverse application domains; to this end a Virtual Digital Library Competence Centre has been established, which provides specific user communities with access to advanced Digital Library technologies, services, testbeds, and the necessary expertise and knowledge to facilitate their take-up; to network and structure the European Digital Library community; to provide a forum where researchers, practitioners, and representatives of interested applications and industries can exchange ideas and experiences; to promote an exchange programme towards improving international cooperation in Digital Library research areas.

The DELOS activities have been structured into seven research clusters and a dissemination cluster (named Work Packages, in line with the EU terminology, and numbered from 1 to 8). Each cluster coordinator (or a senior representative) will present the main research themes of the cluster, and the results achieved so far. The event (actually a half day) will start at 2pm on September 15, right after the closing of ECDL 2004, and will end at 6pm of the same day.

The DELOS Information Day is a unique opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of all the DELOS activities. Participation is free and does not require prior registration. A form will be circulated during the event to collect the names of the participants, their organizations and their interest in participating in DELOS activities.
