Professional profile

Position: Full Professor
Qualification: Degree in Electronic Physics from University of Bari, 1970
First Appointment at University of Bari: 1974
Career: She is Full Professor of Computer Science (1994).
From 1997 to 2001 she has been the Director of CILA, the Interdepartmental Center for Logic and Applications of the University of Bari and since 1997 to 2002 Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Bari. At the moment she is the Director of the Department of Computer Science. She chairs the LACAM (Laboratory for Knowledge Acquisition and Machine Learning), at the University of Bari, Italy, in the Department of Computer Science.
From 1974 to 1982 she was Assistant Professor of System Analysis at the Faculty of Information Science and then (1984) Associate Professor of Computer Science. She taught "System Analysis and Development", "Theory and Applications of Computing Machines", "Real Time Computing". Currently she is lecturer of the courses "Algorithms and Data Structures", "Knowledge Engineering and Expert Systems" and “Knowledge Representation” for the Faculty of Computer Science.
In 1986 she founded the LACAM (http://lacam.di.uniba.it:8000): the lab includes two full professors, three associate professors, six assistant professors, and many Ph.D. students. LACAM Lab. is one of the nodes of the Esprit Network of Excellence in Machine Learning (MLnet 7125, Mlnet-II 29288) and of the European Network on Computational Logic (Esprit Compunet 7230), of the European Network of excellence in Inductive logic programming (ILP02 Net INCO 977102), of the European Knowledge Discovery Network of excellence IST-2001-33086 KDNet, of the European Network of excellence on Digital Libraries (DELOS I end DELOS II).
Indeed the major application field of the research in Machine Learning concerns Document Analysis and Understanding: since 1993 Floriana Esposito with her research group has been involved in the ESPRIT project Intrepid 5203, for the development and the application of INnovative Techniques for REcognition and Processing of Documents. The conceptual indexing and retrieval of digital documents is a strong research interest that has been one of the topics of CONCERTO Esprit Project 29159 (CONCEptual indexing, querying and ReTrieval Of Digital documents). Another european project related to these topics was the IST-1999 project COLLATE 20882 (Collaboratory for Annotation, Indexing and Retrieval of Digitized Historical Archive Materials), whose main goal was to design, implement and test a www-based collaboratory (collaborative online laboratory) that provides a comfortable environment/interface to support users in their annotation, indexing and retrieval of multi-format, multimedia historical archive materials.
Floriana Esposito is author of more than 250 papers which have been published in international journals and Proceedings; she is a member of IEEE Computer Society, AAAI (American Association for Artificial Intelligence), AICA (Italian Association for Information Science and Automatic Computing), IAPR (International Association for Pattern Recognition), AI*IA (Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence). She is often involved as a reviewer in different EC research Programs. She has been several times in the directorial board of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence and responsible of the national Machine Learning Group. She is in the scientific committees of many international scientific Conferences in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Recently she was one of the Program Chairs Of the 19th European Conference on Machine Learning and 8th Conference on Knowledge Discovery in Data Bases ECML/PKDD 2004 hold in Pisa on September 2004 and the General chair of the Eighteenth International Conference on Industrial & Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems (IEA/AIE-2005) held in Bari on June 2005.
