Prof. Douglas Tudhope
The Hypermedia Research Unit has a track record in hypermedia and knowledge organisation systems, projects including semantic hypermedia and spatial ontologies, with three PhDs awarded in this area. The EPSRC-funded FACET project investigated the automatic expansion of faceted search queries, using the semantic relationships inherent in a thesaurus. The project was in collaboration with the J. Paul Getty Trust, who provided the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) - the primary thesaurus used in the project, and the UK National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI). An extract of the NMSI Collections Database acted as a test-bed for the project. The EPSRC’s final assessment rated the project as 'Outstanding' in Communication of Research Outputs and Cost Effectiveness ('Tending to Outstanding' overall). A case study of the project was featured in a recent thematic issue of the EC project DigiCult, a technology watch for cultural and scientific heritage. GLAM has been working in knowledge organisation systems for several years. Tudhope has co-edited (with Traugott Koch) a special issue, JoDI 4(4), on ‘New applications of Knowledge Organisation Systems’ in January 2004 and has co-organised three well-attended workshops on Networked Knowledge Organisation Systems/Services at ECDL conferences . GLAM has worked with KOS for several years. The FACET project investigated automatic expansion of facated search queries. A case study featured in Digicult Thematic Issue 6. Tudhope is the Editor of NRHM and has co-edited (with Koch) a special issue, JoDI 4(4) 2004, on ‘New applications of KOS’ and 3 three well-attended workshops on Networked KOS at ECDL. He is a member of Cluster 5 and has given 2 invited presentations at DELOS workshops. |
