LACAM, the Knowledge Acquisition and Machine Learning Laboratory, is part of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Bari, Italy, and has been active in the area of knowledge acquisition and multi-strategy learning since 1986. Research at LACAM spans from knowledge acquisition to machine learning techniques, with the aim of improving Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The main research activities are: machine learning methods and systems based on symbolic and numerical approaches, integration of numerical representations through first-order logic for the development of reasoning techniques under uncertainty, methods and systems for automatic revision of logic theories; Intelligent document processing: paper document acquisition and document image understanding, document understanding and text summarization; spatial Data Mining; multimedia and multimodal human-computer interaction, visual languages, visual query systems for knowledge bases; formal definition of the communication languages and paradigms for data and knowledge representation, Web interfaces, user modeling methods for the development of adaptive interfaces, usability of interactive systems; intelligent tutoring systems.
