This panel will discuss the emerging issue in libraries of coexistence of heterogeneous contents and metadata, with a special focus in the requirements for management of digital contents. The panel will count with representatives from leading IT players:
Peter Noerr ( Edulib ) - Peter is the author of the "Digital Library Toolkit", a report commissioned by Sun with a first version published in 1998 and with a new version to be presented in ECDL2000.
Karim Boughida (
Endeavor Information Systems
) - Karim will present the Endeavor's perspective on practical application
of metadata standards in
building integrated digital collection.
Pedro Silva ( Software AG ) - Pedro will focus on the usage of TAMINO, an XML repository management system, in library's frameworks, namely in the BIBSYS network.
Paul Nieuwenhuysen and Stefaan Renard (VUB - Vrije Universiteit Brussel) - Paul and Stefaan will bring a perspective of an "in-house" library management system (VUBIS), extended to handle metadata and digital journals.
This panel will discuss opportunities and experiences from relevant national and international programs, projects and organizations in the area of Digital Libraries. Expected participants are:
