DELOS Brainstorming Workshops

This series of workshops is intended to bring together top researchers from all the parts of the world, with the objective of defining "future research direction" reports in the field of Digital Libraries and to provide input for the definition of future research programmes in the domain of Digital Libraries both for the EC and national research funding agencies.

1st DELOS Brainstorming Workshop on Digital Libraries
Future Research Directions for a European Research Programme

13-15 June 2001 - Alta Badia, Dolomites (Italy)

Prominent members of the European research community were invited to participate in and contribute to the definition of a new vision of digital libraries, and to translate it into concrete research actions which will become an integral part of the next 6th FP. Some prominent members from the US research community were also invited, in collaboration with the National Science Foundation. In all, 15 EU and 5 US high-level researchers attended. The meeting was organized as follows. Each participant produced a short position statement reflecting his/her views about the main advances expected over the next few years in his/her field of activity and expertise, and how these developments can contribute to the generation of new systems and services.Small groups were then formed which focussed on specific aspects of digital libraries and produced brief reports. Finally, a consolidated report was prepared for the Cultural Heritage Applications Unit as input for the definition of the 6th FP.

2nd DELOS Brainstorming Workshop on Digital Libraries
Main Research Themes for a European Research Programme

6-7 December 2002 - Pisa (Italy)

The final report of the first brainstorming meeting (Digital Libraries: Future Directions for a European Research Programme) provided a high level framework for future research in Digital Libraries. Also in view of the forthcoming Call for Proposals under FP6, it was decided to hold a second brainstorming meeting to define more detailed research agendas in the identified major research topics. The meeting started with each participant presenting the main research activities relevant to Digital Libraries presently going on at their own institutions, and then presenting a proposal for a research line, possibly falling into one of the major topics identified in San Cassiano.
The coordinators were responsible to identify additional research groups in their research topic and had the task of defining a detailed research agenda, which should have coordinated the activities of all the groups in their topic.

3rd DELOS Brainstorming Workshop on Digital Libraries
Future Research Directions

8-10 July 2004 - Corvara (Italy)

To explore the directions in which Digital Libraries evolve and obtain a fresh perspective on the long-term research agenda of the field, in July 2004 the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries organized a brainstorming workshop on "Digital Library Research Directions". A more particular objective was also to outline the main research directions of the future European research programme in the field of Digital Libraries (DLs). For the workshop, DELOS invited approximately 25 prominent researchers both from the Digital Library field as well from some important enabling technologies, two of whom were from the US while the rest from Europe.
